In class

Step1: Lead-in

T: Before starting our lesson, I want to bring you a piece of bad news. An earthquake happened in Wenchuan in Sichuan Province at 2:28p.m. the day before yesterday. More than 12,000 people died in the earthquake. Because when the earthquake happened, the Ss were having classes in their teaching buildings. The teaching buildings fell down and they had to no time to run out. Premier Wen Jiabao went there quickly and comforted the people there. We are very sorry to hear the bad news and I even have no courage to look at the pictures on the Internet. But I think the people in Wenchuan will win the earthquake. You are very lucky to stay here. So what we should do is to cherish our lives and study and work hard. Do you think so?

Earthquake is a kind of disaster. What other disasters do you know?

Ss: flood, drought, sandstorm, snowstorm, tsunami, cyclone, fire…

T: what do you think of fire?

Ss: (important, useful, dangerous…)

T: Fire is very important in our daily life. What can we do with fire?

Ss: (To make water hot, cook food, give light, make our house warm…)

T: Fire is very important and useful. But sometimes it is very dangerous if you are not careful with it. It can burn things or even hurt you. Also, a fire can destroy forests and tall buildings. So you should keep yourself away from fire.

If you are in a hotel, a big fire happens. What will you do?

1)      You should call 119 and the firemen will come to save you quickly.

2)      Rush out of the fire as quickly as you can.

3)      Pour some water over your clothes. Put a wet towel over your mouth and your nose to keep the smoke out.
